Art Projects 2021

Martin Jacobson Queen of F*cking Everything

Exhibition period May 8–Nov 7, 2021
Opening May 8–May 9, 2021
Curators Elisabeth Millqvist & Mattias Givell

Martin Jacobson occupies the cathedral like Hay Barn with hand-painted backdrops, the largest of which measures 16 x 9 meters. They hang from the ceiling and rise above us, lining the walls and create surrealist encounters.

QUEEN OF F*CKING EVERYTHING

Martin Jacobson works in dialogue with art history as a way of investigating painting. In his works, he refers to and is inspired by everything from popular history to religious images and Baroque theater.

In the Hay Barn, Jacobson’s exhibition Queen of F*cking Everything presents gigantic hand-painted backdrops: The CathedralThe Castle, The Water, and Swan Lake, which he painted for artist Jonas Gardell’s show of the same title as the exhibition, as well as the painting Death Takes a Break and Large Swan, also acrylic on canvas, created at the same time in 2018.

Now, they take on the leading role as paintings and by virtue of this largescale format, the observer can wander among the motifs that, alongside each other, create surrealist encounters and encompass everything from the Florence Cathedral to swans swimming.

Martin Jacobson (b. 1978, works in Stockholm) works in dialogue with art history as a way of investigating painting. Jacobson studied at Örebro Art College (1998–2000) as well as the Malmö Art Academy (2000–2005). Selected exhibitions include the Venice Biennale(The Collectors) (2009), the Biennale of Sydney (2010), solo exhibitions at Nordic Watercolour Museum (2013), Norrtälje konsthall (2015), and Vandalorum (2019).
